All About Me

"The children drew colourful pictures of themselves. These were scanned into the computer. They then used the laptop computers to create their names and their descriptive word."
Background, Summary & Overview
This was a short IT project for a reception class as part of a curriculum project called Ourselves.
The aim was to produce a poster for each child with a photograph of themselves, a self portrait, a photograph of their favourite toy, their name and a word which they felt described them. The posters would be A3 in size.
The photographs had to be of a high quality to allow for enlargement, so a small photographic studio was set up in the classroom.
Resources & Costs
- Nikon D2XS Digital SLR Camera
- Nikon SB800 Speed Lights
- Nikon Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8
- Bowens Lighting Kit
Action Taken
A CLC member took the high quality photographs of the children, but we also took a small digital camera to allow the children to take photographs of the toys they had brought into school. They arranged the pose for the toy.
The children drew colourful pictures of themselves. These were scanned into the computer.
They then used the laptop computers to create their names and their descriptive word. They selected the colour, font and style for both of the words and saved their work.
The photographs and text were used to create the posters. This editing was done at the CLC.
Impact & Outcomes
The children were interested in the photographic studio that was set up and although their participation might almost be classed as role play they did make informed decisions about how to take photographs. They also made suggestions as to which pose they wanted to adopt, often to illustrate their descriptive word eg footballer.
They certainly had ownership of their posters! This project helped with self esteem as they were encouraged to use positive words to describe themselves.
They were involved in creating the text format that they required changing size, colour and font to achieve their individual style.
