Virgin Media supports Rotherham’s young film talent

Which Witch Crew

From 29 June, the work of Rotherham’s next potential Spielbergs and Tarantinos will be available through Virgin Media’s TV on demand service across the UK.

Virgin Media and FilmFlex Movies have teamed up with First Light Movies, the National Lottery-funded filmmaking initiative to screen Which Witch?, a short film created by local children from schools in Rotherham in conjunction with Rawmarsh City Learning Centre who for the first time, will have their work viewed by millions of UK households.

Which Witch?, about a magic duel between two plasticine witches will be shown alongside 14 other films from the 2007 First Light Movies Awards. Dubbed Britain’s own Mini Oscars®, the awards reward young filmmakers, aged between five and 18-years-old, for their achievements in making short digital films.

Trish Sharp, development manager from Rawmarsh City Learning Centre said: "We’re really excited about Which Witch? being screened on Virgin Media TV, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the children who have worked so hard on this project. It will take the film to a much wider audience and it’s great to see young people’s work celebrated in this way."

Cinemagic Young Filmmakers Festival 2006

Which Witch

Rawmarsh CLC has many opportunities around filmmaking and animation. In April a group of 19 children attended the CLC to create an animated film. Which Witch was produced, a 9 minute animated film about 2 witches.

We are delighted to let you know that the animated film was selected for the final of the Cinemagic Young Filmmakers Festival 2006.

Which Witch

The final took place on Friday 24th November at the Queens Film Theatre, Belfast. Which Witch was given the award of Highly Commended, 2nd place.

Cinemagic was looking for imaginative and original films made by young people to be screened as part of Cinemagic Young Filmmaker 2006. The children were given the freedom to decide how they made their film and the storyline. They had the choice of fact or fiction, comedy or drama, news programme or documentary.

Which Witch

The event was able to showcase the best short film entries and there will also be a series of workshops and masterclasses with renowned members of the film and TV industry. The prizes were awarded for best film in each category - the winning entry will be screened during next year's Cinemagic World Screen Festival for Young People in December 07.

The winning films will also be championed by Cinemagic and sent into other film competitions around the world.

Which Witch

A spokesman for the department for education and skills said:

This project has demonstrated that Rotherham’s children can compete and succeed against the best in the country. The fact that their work will now compete in an international arena will be a massive boost to all those involved. I wish them every success in the next stage and hope their work inspires others to follow.

The competition was open to anyone aged 25 and under from the UK and Ireland. The children have done exceptionally well to reach this final. There was over 3000 entries!
